San Jose Measure E

San Jose City Initiative Changes Existing Ordinances to Increase Number of Gaming Card Tables; Allow For Slot Machines if Permitted by State Law; Allows Any Gambling Permitted By State Law

This measure dramatically increases the number of card tables permitted in San Jose.  While we are not big fans of gambling, we do not believe that increasing the number of card tables will dramatically affect the detrimental effects (mostly crime) that come with gambling.  If this initiative only allowed for increased card tables we would probably support it, believing that increased tax revenue justifies the change.  Unfortunately, Measure E goes further.  It also permanently “permits” other types of gambling, including but not limited to slot machines, if changes in state law occur.  This may seem like a minor point, but we think San Jose residents should be permitted to make that call in the future.  We don’t like permanently turning that power over to the gaming industry.
